This is the South Poop legacy site

Hi y’all.

South Poop started here on WordPress all those years ago (can it be 10 years…).

About five years ago, we moved.  We had a site redirect going for a few years, but it has now lapsed.

We still get visitors at WordPress.com because our most ‘poopular’ post on this site ranks pretty high with teh Google.

It’s Curb your ‘Curb your dog

So now that you’re here, here’s the ‘scoop’:

We’ve got our own domain at southpoop.com now – please visit us there!

scampering from the arm of the law

#southlooppoop

A rare picture sent to us by a correspondent captures poo scofflaws scampering from police in Cottontail park:

pooscofflaws

Probably the best picture of the Father, the Dog and the Child, it is a medium sized golden colored dog.  This pic even shows the two Police starting to walk through the park, they are right before the drinking fountain [at the top left].  After being talked to by the Police, which was likely ‘Hey, leash your dog!’, the Police even pointed to the dog, the adult leashed the dog, and the party walked off to the exit at Federal [on the northwest side of the park].  That gives us an idea where they live, i.e. Dearborn Park II, if they lived on State, they would have used the Plymouth exit…

That looks like a big dog.  That means they left us with a big poo.

It also means that the cops had an opportunity to earn a fat $500 check for the city. Too bad they missed that, huh?

And that poor kid, being brought up in a life of crime.

Such a shame.

Sledding Kids Covered in Poop

The poo controversy builds at Bartelme Park:  Sledding Kids Covered With Dog Poop in West Loop, Neighbors Angry

This is particularly interesting because this park has a so called ‘Dog Friendly Area‘ that has, obviously, been rejected by a significant number of dog owners in the area.  Despite similar and substantial off-hours off-leash dog use at other Chicago parks, it’s rare to see this much poo controversy.

If you read the article, there seem to be a lot of comments that exhibit a patronizing disrespect for dog owners – who largely, just want to exercise their dogs.

Perhaps it’s worth considering – has the 4000 sq ft ‘DFA’ actually engendered mutual contempt? Seems more like a prison than a dog park to us:

The slow decay of winter poo

Everybody’s talking about it.

It’s been a bad winter in Chicago, and that means that as the snow melts several month’s worth of poo emerges.

You see the trash, broken bottles, cigarette butts, too…

But it’s the poo that gets the attention.

Fools at the Streeterville park leave dog shit in the tennis courts and get shut down!

Idiots at Coliseum Park leave dog shit all over the park…

But think about it.

It’s pretty straightforward to do the numbers.

All it takes is one dog owner leaving his dog’s poo behind every day for 60 days to mean that on some lovely March morning  in the melting snow pack there are 60 shits to gaze upon.

There are hundreds of dog owners around.

It only takes the 1%.

A massive poo to start the Fall poo season

A beautiful day for a walk with the pups!  Your South Poop correspondent was happily daydreaming about the miracle of the poo fairies that everyday magically appear to clear orphan poo from this corner of the South Loop.

But the first poo of Fall was indeed waiting somewhere out there, hidden in this colorful Halloween scene:

We wonder who will find it first?  A costumed child frolicking on a cool Fall day?  Or the grumpy lady walking home after a bad day at the office?  Or the rats… will the rats enjoy a tasty treat?

Can you find the poo?

what a disappointment

Burnham Station Condominiums is no 1401 S. State St – the dog people there have a reputation as among the most responsible in the area.

But we found this unfortunate accident waiting for us on those grounds this morning. Somebody’s going to be tweeting about stepping in poo this AM:

It has been a while since we’ve seen something like this at Burnham Station. We hope it’s not the start of a disturbing new trend.

Poo Free Parks is looking for 10K signatures

Check out this PET-ition at Change.org!

I Want Poo Free Parks! Sign the PET-ition!

Dog owners, dog lovers, dog haters…no matter who you are, everyone despises stepping in POO at the park. The solution is proven and simple: provide the dog poo bags necessary for owners to pick up, and they will DOO it. Unfortunately, the cost for biodegradable bags, conveniently located dispensers, and continuous service is unaffordable for most park systems.

That’s when the Poo Free Parks Founder, Bill Airy, realized a brilliant solution: create a local business that provides a convenient and consistent supply of biodegradable bags to dog owners, but instead of charging the taxpayers, find local businesses who want to support the cause by advertising on a discrete sign attached to each station. This ensures that the dispenser stations are always filled with good quality biodegradable bags, free from graffiti and vandalism, and at no cost to the City or its taxpayers. Simple. Perfect.

Unfortunately, while your parks managers believe that this is a good program, there are a couple of residents out there who would claim that they speak for you, and would rather watch all of us step in poo than see this eco-friendly program enter our parks. They are putting up quite a stink, and this PET-ition serves as a way to turn their bark into the whimper that it really is.

Poo Free Parks® partners with municipalities around the nation to supply, install, and maintain eco-friendly pet clean-up stations, at no cost to the City or the taxpayer. Best of all, sponsorship revenues generated by Poo Free Parks® are shared with the park system for use towards other community programs.

If you feel that your park system should partner with Poo Free Parks, then please sign this PET-tion and pass it along.

Imagine – a poo bag dispenser on every corner…. It could happen.  And… it would cost us nothing.

Find out more about Poo Free Parks, take a look at their interactive poo bag dispenser map (it’s teh awesome!), sign the PET-ition, and let your Alderman know you support the P0o Free Parks program!

big nasty one on wabash

Things seemed pretty clean on the streets during our walk with the pups this evening.

Until we came face to face with this:

Well sited, my friend.  It’s huge, but seems well camouflaged in the cracks and staining of the sidewalk. Dark, almost invisible, isn’t it? Sneaks up on you.

Some party-goer alighting their car will be stepping in that poo tonight for sure.

I don’t normally step in poo… but when I do, I prefer to step in a big nasty poo.

“pick up, it’s normal!”

These poo bag pouches carry a brilliant message (unfortunately they’re only available at select stores in France)!

Ramasser, c’est normal!

Pick up, it’s normalexactly!

It’s not a stretch to say that most people, certainly most who don’t have dogs, think that it’s ‘weird‘ or ‘gross‘ to be picking up poo, and it’s not a stretch to think that if you walk away from your* poo, many folks would ‘understand’. But as long as it’s socially accepted to feel this way, the problem has to persist.

And finesadmonishments and scolding don’t address this.

“Pick up, it’s normal” does.

Leave it to our European friends at Le Chien du Citoyen to figure this out!

Brilliant.

Dogkisser blog

There’s a blog out of Canada that came to our attention when its author commented here (when we first started). She had clearly thought a lot about dog poo, dog parks and dogs in society. It’s worth checking out: the DogKisser Blog.

Here are her posts about poop. This author has a ton of observations that are relevant and useful to us.

Example: the need for trash pickup and bag supply to raise compliance. Otherwise, any policy is neglectful and disingenuous:

What do I think would raise compliance and make people start picking up their dogs’ poop?

  1. Poop bags at all entrances to Point Pleasant Park.
  2. GARBAGE CANS to put the poop bags in – and people to EMPTY THE GARBAGE CANS.
  3. City staff in the parks to FINE PEOPLE who DON’T pick up their dogs poop.

Those 3 things would raise compliance by about 1000%. Right now people know that they can get away with not picking up their dogs poop. So why should they? If there’s no consequences – there’s going to be NO COMPLIANCE. It’s pretty simple.

You can put all the flags in poop that you want. But if you don’t give dog owners some tools to deal with the poop – you’re being VERY disingenous. And unfair.

Example: poo should be considered best as litter; but dog owners are judged as a class:

I liken dog shit to Tim Horton’s cups – people throw them away everywhere – and you see them everywhere, but you’d never consider shutting down any Tim Horton’s coffee shops because of people throwing away their cups irresponsibly instead of putting them into garbage receptacles. Simply because you can assign a niche demographic to place blame on – does not mean that you can shut down access to public space to the whole of that demographic for the irresponsibility of a small minority.

That is completely wrong – and non-sensical as shutting down every Tim Hortons because of their cups being thrown away on street corners. It’s exactly the same thing.

p.s. What’s a Tim Horton’s, eh?

More poop at MRJ park

Mary Richardson Jones Park, again.

Our correspondent writes:

I left one of my custom made flags with each of the orphan loads but this time I decided not to adopt them. Rather, I left them there for a pick up later. I think leaving the orphans there with the flag makes more of a statement than my previous adoption strategy. Hopefully the neighbors will become a little more aware. I’m also hoping to alert the person leaving the mess that someone is actively pursuing them.

This time, we got some great pictures!

Those are some awesome signs. “Decided not to adopt them“, indeed!

Looks like things are heating up at MJR park!

iScoopy Pal

Looks like Poopsta has a run for its money!  Check out these stylishly decorated poop containers for the modern urban girl with fashion sense!   More of teh Awesome.

This seems to be a thoughtfully designed device (and I don’t mean just the Eiffel Towers!).  Some of the design goals:

  • Eliminates Feel – iScoopy Pal™ isolates the hand from contact with dog poop. It exemplifies a light, flexible, ergonomic design customized for the human hand yet sturdy enough for scooping dog waste for Zero touch.
  • Alleviates Sight – Minimizes sight during and after scooping by completely enclosing the dog waste. By providing a visual barrier between the dog owner and the waste, iScoopy Pal™ eases an unpleasant responsibility.
  • Manages Smell – Odors stemming from dog excrements are generally unbearable. iScoopy Pal™ offers several natural fragranced scents to mask these odors.
  • Enables Effective Scoop – An ergonomic design that eliminates feel, alleviates sight, and manages smell enabling the owner to effectively remove dog poop using a single scooping motion for zero mess.

Here’s the video:

Perfect for the up-and-coming, modern, and stylish South Loop of Chicago!

picking up poop as a moral issue?

A couple of discussions of poop as a moral issue.  OMFG.

We asked recently WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?), and concluded based on the tweets of some of His followers, the He would probably not pick up His Dog’s poo.

Today, we ask, WWARD (What Would Ayn Rand Do)?

This question is considered by {dan-oliver} in “Atlas Shrugged (While Walking His Dog)“. He asks –

Is it immoral to neglect picking up after your pooch?

He notes “Because I am responsible for the actions of my dog, then I am also responsible for its bodily functions, as this is in itself an action, albeit a fairly routine one.”  Indeed.  But I have to admit getting lost with the somewhat forced connections made in the following discussion:

When one doesn’t pick up after their own, there is less incentive for the next person to do so. Atlas Shrugged is a compelling example of what happens to society when, due to indifference and decreased incentive, it’s most productive members stop producing. What would happen if we stopped the motor of the clean-up-after-your-dog world?

Ouch.  The ‘motor of the clean-up-after-your-dog-world‘!?!?!  Where are we going with this?  Have we really addressed what, exactly, the Objectivist take on dog poop might be?

I’m not so sure.

A link in that post leads to another “5 Situations Where It’s Morally OK” to leave dog poop behind.

Morally OK‘, indeed.  Read them for yourselves.

Framing the issue as “Dog poop crimes“, as one considered a ‘Moral‘ question,  as one where a person can feel ‘Morally Justified‘, or not…  Does this have any value for taking action in our community?  Or is it simply the relic of a very old, very stale world of ‘BAD’ and ‘GOOD’?

Ah, public toilets for dogs!

Or, as they would say in Pune, India, “Loos for Pets”.

So, is this an idea that will go over in the South Loop?

Dog toilet design
A urine block is made using rough soil and fine sand. For dog excreta, special chambers covered with mesh that will be easy to use are planned. “We need to avoid unwanted use for any other purpose. We also want to avoid dog fights inside the toilet compound area, as some dogs can be quite aggressive,” Gore said. “The importance of these toilets shall be described to citizens. Training certain dogs to make use of these places is another task we wish to begin.”

Indeed!  This is really a lovely idea…

And it seems to be a serious proposal!

“The authorities are thinking about it,” said Gore. With 4,000 registered dog lovers facing problems of health and hygiene, the initiative has been welcomed. Gore’s plan is to begin with a ward at Nigdi Pradhikaran or Chinchwad station first. Each pet toilet is estimated to cost Rs 50,000 and, according to the proposal, at least 12 to 15 shall be installed at various spots.

To lift the picture and caption illustrating the article – Are they toilet trained?

Doggie Doo – The Family Game!

Yes, great news!  Takkie Kakkie comes to the US…  finally!  We ran into this game earlier in our post “Funny Action Against Heap“.  Now, we can all buy one for ourselves!

What is Doggie Doo?  It’s “the Original Dog that Goes Doo!” This is truly awesome. Kids, feed your pup some treats… and out comes his poo!  It’s fun for the whole family.

And, apparently, the game is taking the world by storm – they say you can buy Doggie Doo at Walmart, Target, and ToysRUs! The game has 90% Five Star reviews at Amazon.com… “Pooping puppy hilarious!“, “The game was a hit in Europe“, “I’m 52 and I love this game!“, “This is a dog lover’s best friend“.

Awesome!

The story from Vienna, Austria has an intriguing headline:  Vienna Stuck In Dog Poo Debate

One blogger said she assumed the posters were showing chocolate cupcakes when she first noticed them before realising what the idea behind the campaign might be.

Looks like a serious campaign though – quoting from the article “Around 2,800 dispensers providing free plastic bags have been set up across the city in the past months.”  That’s a serious effort.

Anyone wonder if Chicago is up to matching Vienna?
